Greenwood Village plans expansion to its skate park

When Greenwood Village built a skate park behind City Hall in 2001, it represented the cutting edge of recreational amenities. Sixteen years later, in response to requests from the public, the city sought and won a grant from Arapahoe County Open Spaces to expand the park. Funding for the street park 4,000-square-foot came from the county with $97,500, and $32,500 in city matching funds. The addition will happen this summer, to the east of the current skate park bowl.
A public input meeting at city hall on Feb. 27, drew a full house of highly activated skaters, ranging in age from 8 to 22, with a sprinkling of parents. The 75-minute meeting was led by Tim Payne of Team Pain, a skate-park design-and-build firm based in Florida.
Using terms like “rail-bender”, “channel gap,” and “mini-spine,” participants peppered Payne with questions and suggestions about the preliminary design he presented. Payne responded enthusiastically by asking the roomful of 75 to vote, by a show of hands, on virtually every suggestion that was offered. He will use the input from the meeting to revise and reconfigure the preliminary design and return on March 27, for a second public session, to present an updated design. Construction is planned for this summer.
The meeting was hosted by Greenwood Village Parks, Trails & Recreation Director Suzanne Moore and her staff. Parks, Trails and Recreation Commissioners Kathy McClintock, Kevin Kopp and Robert Tew, along with newly installed youth commissioner Sarah Dormer were also on hand, listening carefully.
